Visiting Scholar Programs

The CSCC Distinguished Visiting Scholar Program hosts experts in the study of contemporary China who have established themselves as intellectual leaders in advancing our understanding of the political, legal, economic, and social factors shaping China and its role in the world today. Distinguished visitors spend 2-4 weeks at the CSCC actively participating in the life of the Center. They are expected to conduct their own research and present it to the Center’s community of scholars, and to meet with interested colleagues and students. Each year, the CSCC provides funding for at least one Distinguished Visiting Scholar that covers round trip transportation costs, housing, and an honorarium.

The CSCC Visiting Research Scholar Program hosts emerging experts in the study of contemporary China who are at an early stage of their careers. These research scholars may propose either a short-term (less than one month) or long-term plan to be in residence at the CSCC to conduct research. Research scholars are expected to actively participate in the life of the Center and present their work to its community of scholars. Visiting research scholars are typically self-funded.

Those interested in either of our Visiting Scholar opportunities should contact the CSCC at cscc-contact@sas.upenn.edu and attach a C.V. or resume along with one-page description of their research plan and nature of their proposed stay at Penn’s CSCC. We invite applications from scholars who have outside sources of funding, or who have planned stays elsewhere in the US, and believe their research would benefit from spending several weeks at Penn’s CSCC.
