Co-sponsored by Penn Institute of Urban Research

Professor Lan Wang’s research focuses on the mechanisms of urban built environment affecting public health, aiming to promote evidence-based practices for healthy city planning. Her presentation covers three aspects: 1) The theoretical framework and technical route of health intervention for spatial planning, which reveals the intrinsic connection between spatial factors and health, and elucidates the hierarchy of pathways to intervene through spatial planning; 2) The healthy space evaluation index system and model, which is an important policy tool for identifying and evaluating urban development’s health impacts on residents, centered on environmental pollution exposure, physical activity, and health outcome prediction; and 3) Case studies demonstrating multi-scale healthy city planning practices based on the research outcomes. These projects have been showcased for Health Design by the World Bank.

Professor Lan Wang is the founder and head of the Healthy City Lab and Dean of the College of Architecture and Urban Planning at Tongji University, Shanghai, China. Her research focuses on healthy city planning and design, urban development strategy and planning, and methodology and technology for urban planning. Prof. Wang serves as Deputy Director and Secretary-General of the China Healthy City Committee (2018-present), and Secretary General, National Steering Committee of Urban and Rural Planning Education in China (2010-2019). She is also a member of the International Steering Committee of the British Healthy Cities Council and a council member of China's National Committee for Health Impact Assessment (HIA).
