China’s Role in the World in the Year of Elections
Kishore Mahbubani, Perry World House Visiting Fellow, Former President of the United Nations Security Council
As people around the world go to the polls and elect new government officials, leaders in Beijing may need to navigate new political landscapes around the world. Candidates in elections from Taiwan to the United States and Europe Union have expressed different views on the trajectory of their country’s relationships with China. What might the so-called “year of elections” mean for how China interacts with countries before and after people go the polls? How will electoral campaigns change the narrative bilateral relations with China? Does Beijing see openings to improve its ability to reduce some leaders’ desire to continue to “derisk” from the Chinese economy?
A veteran diplomat, Kishore Mahbubani is a distinguished fellow at the Asia Research Institute, part of the National University of Singapore (NUS). He is a former president of the United Nations Security Council and the founding dean of NUS’ Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. Mahbubani writes and gives talks on the rise of Asia, geopolitics, and global governance. He has released nine books, including Has China Won? and The Asian 21st Century, an open-access book which has been downloaded over three million times. He has published articles in the New York Times, Washington Post, Financial Times, and Foreign Affairs. Mahbubani has been listed among the world’s top 100 public intellectuals by Foreign Policy and Prospect and among the top fifty individuals who will shape the debate on the future of capitalism by the Financial Times. He was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in October 2019. Mahbubani received a degree in philosophy from the National University of Singapore and a master’s degree from Dalhousie University, which later awarded him an honorary doctorate. This year, he will be the Schlager Visiting Fellow at Perry World House.
