Roberts will discuss the themes of his book, The Myth of Chinese Capitalism, including how legacy policies from China's past relegate its migrant workers and rural residents to second-class status, and pose huge challenges to its necessary transition from Factory of the World to a consumption and services-driven model of economic growth. He will examine how reforms seem to have stalled and why even as China faces substantial risks related to its aging population and soaring wealth inequality, and why that means its economic future is deeply uncertain even as it emerges from the worst of the COVID-19 crisis.

Dexter Tiff Roberts is the author of the recently-published The Myth of Chinese Capitalism: the Worker, the Factory, and the Future of the World and an award-winning journalist and speaker now serving as a Fellow at the University of Montana’s Maureen and Mike Mansfield Center. He is a regular commentator on the U.S.-China economic, trade and political relationship. Previously he was China bureau chief and Asia News Editor at Bloomberg Businessweek, based in Beijing for more than two decades. He has a bachelor degree from Stanford University and master of international affairs from Columbia University.
