In order to understand the social foundations of the Chinese government’s expansive welfare policy in the past decade and the effectiveness of that strategy on regime support and stability in China, I developed two research projects: 1) one explores Chinese citizens’ preferences for government redistribution using World Values Survey data from 1990 to 2012; 2) the other project examines social policy’s effects on public support of government using data from China Survey (2008) and China Family Panel Studies (2010). I will present the theoretical context, research design and empirical findings of these two projects and discuss their implications for social stability in China and political legitimacy of the Chinese government.
