China and Japan: where to go from here?

Ren Xiao, Professor of International Politics, Fudan University
| CSCC Conference Room, Fisher-Bennett Hall 345

The territorial dispute over the Diaoyu/Senkaku islands between China and Japan has once again emerged as a prominent issue that disrupts regional security in East Asia.  Episodes like China’s People’s Liberation Army sending a surveillance aircraft to the islands and prompting Japanese fighters to scramble have dramatized the risks. China and Japan do not appear prepared to negotiate over conflict management mechanisms, let alone territorial sovereignty. This talk analyze recent developments and their implications.

Ren Xiao is professor of international politics and Director of the Center for the Study of Chinese Foreign Policy at the Institute of International Studies, Fudan University, Shanghai, China. Previously he was Senior Fellow and Director of the Asia Pacific Studies Department, Shanghai Institute for International Studies.
